Fiction has been maligned for centuries as being "false, " "untrue, " yet good fiction provides more truth about the world, about life, and even about the reader, than can be found in non-fiction.

About This Quote

The truth is fiction. Fiction is the only thing we know for sure never to be true. We can't validate it through logic or fact or reality, and we can't disprove it, so it's the only thing we've got to go by. Fiction doesn't say anything about what's really happening, and fiction is always about something that hasn't happened yet. Karen Joy Fowler describes fiction as "a tool for exploration of ideas and experiences that are not practical to explore in real life." It's a way of exploring things that can't be proven, but that we might like to believe could happen. Fiction allows us to imagine the future and our potential in it, and maybe even change or protect what we see happening around us through the choices we make in fictional scenarios.
